The 10th annual Blue & White, Ryerson Rams Hockey Alumni game was played at George Bell Arena in Toronto from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Saturday, February 2, 2008, prior to the Rams vs. Queens game at 2:00 pm.
Special thanks goes out to the Ryerson Event Coordinator Liz Devine, the Ryerson Alumni Office's Anjela Wilson, the people who worked the reception, the game officials and Ram's staff,
Coach Graham Wise, Head Trainer Harvey Boutilier & Manager Carmen Swallow. All of these people did a great job supporting us!!!
Once again, for the 5th year in a row, Team White defeated Team Blue 11-4 in a royal thrashing.
Although the game started out with Team Blue jumping into a quick lead, Team
White soon tied it up and went ahead 2-1. The game remained level at 2-2 until
almost the end of the first period when Team White scored a late goal to regain
the lead. Team Blue never got another sniff after that as Team White scored 2
unanswered goals in the second period and the lopsided third had Team White outscoring their
opponents 6-2.
Noted stars of the game were
Jason Kotack
with 4 goals and
Kirby Tokarski
with a hat trick, both for Team White. With a Crosby-like move, Tokarski scored the goal of the game by beating a defenseman with an outside-in
maneuver and picking the bottom glove-side corner with a quick wrist shot from the high slot. Also to be noted is the two goal,
two assist performance by
Scott Finlayson, a Ram from 1980-1982.
The senior veteran in the game was
Don DesJardine
of Owen Sound Ontario. Don played for the Rams from 1961-1963 and the younger guys were
honoured to have him in the room and to skate with him. One of Don's team mates from the 60's,
Don Taylor
of Mississauga, showed up to watch the game and it was nice to see them re-united after 45 years.
The really good news is that the current Rams Team played a great final home game of the season and defeated Queens 6-5 in regulation time. Since most of the alumni stayed to watch, it was a special treat.
A coalition of former Rams selected
Cory Konecny
as the Rams Player Of The Game for his two goal performance and awarded him a $75 gift certificate for a night out at the Keg Restaurant. Let's hope he spends it on food. ;-)
$1000 of the proceeds from the Rams Alumni Hockey Game were donated to the new
"Adopt A Team"
program at Ryerson. These funds go directly into a hockey team account at the university. Under the "Adopt A Team" program, all
of the varsity teams at Ryerson have an account where funds can be donated and used at the coaches'
discretions within the rules of the OUA and the CIAU.
Private donations are also graciously accepted.
