Larry Allan Pringle
1944-2026
Ryerson Sports Hall of Fame – 2009

The Ryerson Rams Hockey Alumni, especially the remaining members of the Ryerson Rams 1962-63 Championship hockey team, regretfully announce the passing of our goal tender Larry Pringle #1, on January 3, 2026.

After playing his minor hockey in his hometown Napanee, Larry came to Ryerson in 1962 and made the team, sharing goaltending duties with Jack Morgan. The team was a veteran powerhouse team. One player had brief NHL experience, another was a Memorial cup winner, while several others had played major junior. The Rams went undefeated during the season and won the OIAA Championship – no other Ryerson or Toronto Metropolitan University Bold  team has done that since.

Larry’s most memorable game was likely his first – the opening game of the season in Varsity Arena. He recorded a shutout in a 14-0 win over the Hamilton Institute Hawks in a game the Ryersonian described as a “Wild and Woolly Contest”.  As a rookie and youngest player on the team, Larry always brought a positive and winning attitude into the room and became one of the most popular players on the team.

In 2012, along with his teammates, he was inducted into the Ryerson Athletics Hall of Fame and also has a seat named after him in The Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens).

In a wonderful tribute to Larry’s time with the Rams, his wife Sherry overheard her grandson Jackson tell his friends that “Grampa was a Ram”. This prompted Sherry – a writer and artist, with help from Jackson – to write and illustrate a book “Grandpa Was a Ram”.

This well illustrated book tells Larry’s story through Jackson’s young eyes from his days playing hockey on a frozen pond in Napanee through to the Championship season in which Jackson proudly concludes “my Grandpa was a Ram”. Several Ram teammates bought copies for their grandkids as a memento for the season.

Following graduation from Ryerson, Larry retuned to Napanee and became Dealer Principal of Pringle Ford for 59 years. Being civic minded, he was also President of the Napanee Kinsmen Club, the Rotary Club and Chairman of the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital. He was also an active member of the Ryerson Rams Hockey Alumni, attending golf tournaments and dinners proudly wearing his #1 Rams retro sweater.

Our sincere condolences and thanks for a life very well lived are extended to Sherry, his children Stephanie, Susan, Mark and their families.
